What is Birds and Buddies?

The “Birds and Buddies” program pairs Surrey Eagles players with students from 23 schools who may be struggling socially or emotionally—whether they’ve experienced bullying, have difficulty making friends, or lack strong support systems. This initiative fosters mentorship, confidence, and connection through meaningful interactions with Eagles players.

Here’s How the Program Works:

Personal Mentorship: Eagles players visit participating elementary schools to meet their buddies. These one-on-one connections provide encouragement and inspiration to students who need it most. Ball Hockey and Team Spirit: Eagles players and their buddies team up for a game of ball hockey, creating fun memories and strengthening their bond. Game Day Celebration: Eagles players invite their buddies’ entire classes, teachers, and parents to attend an Eagles home game. At the game, the buddy’s photo will be featured on the jumbo screen as a special thank-you for their support. Behind-the-Scenes Access: Each buddy receives a personal tour of the rink, including the dressing rooms and training facilities, guided by their Eagles player. Breakfast and Merchandise: The program includes a shared breakfast where Eagles players present their buddies with team merchandise, making them feel like part of the team. Skating Nights: Buddies and their Eagles players participate in post-game skate nights, with Eagles players providing skating lessons and encouragement. Locker Room Notes: Each buddy writes a personal note for their Eagles mentor to leave in their locker as a reminder of who they are playing for. Additionally, each buddy receives tickets for themselves, two friends, and two parents to attend Eagles home games, ensuring their family can share in the excitement and connection.

For these young students, knowing they have a “big bird” looking out for them can make a world of difference, both in the classroom and beyond.
