SURREY — Last night, the Surrey Eagles (1-14-1-0) faced off against the Langley Rivermen (8-8-0-0) in a Mainland Cup rivalry matchup.
The game got off to a fast, back-and-forth start as both teams created great chances early. Goaltenders Jaiden Sharma and Dylan Johnson were both called upon to make key saves — and they delivered. Langley eventually opened the scoring on the power play when Aaron Reierson cleaned up a rebound in front. The Eagles responded quickly with two goals of their own — Max Davidson netting his first as an Eagle, followed by Lucas DiGiantommaso — giving Surrey a 2–1 lead heading into the first intermission.
The Rivermen came out hot in the second period, capitalizing once again on the power play. This time, leading scorer Zachary Benayon buried a rebound to tie the game at two. The Eagles answered quickly, however, as Ryan Staples continued his hot streak to restore the Surrey lead. Langley wasn’t done yet. Their power play struck again when Andreas Mikrogiannakis buried a puck that bounced off the back wall past a sprawling Sharma, tying the game 3–3 heading into the third period.
The third period mirrored the first — fast-paced and evenly matched. Surrey pressed hard to regain the lead, but it was Langley captain Darius Bachler who broke the deadlock, ripping a shot off the inside of the crossbar to make it 4–3 Rivermen. Langley then sat back to protect their lead as the Eagles pushed for the equalizer. With the goalie pulled and 1:10 left on the clock, Ryan Staples struck again — burying a rebound in front for his second of the game and sending this one to overtime.
Overtime began with a flurry of chances at both ends, as Sharma and Johnson continued to stand tall. Just over three minutes into the extra frame, Parker Forlin crashed the net on a rush and buried a rebound to seal the win for Langley — ending a barn burner at The Nest. Langley’s power play proved the difference, going 3-for-5, while Surrey went 0-for-5. Jaiden Sharma was once again outstanding, stopping 49 of 54 shots and earning third star of the game honors.
The Eagles will be in action next at home against the Prince George Spruce Kings on Friday, November 14. Puck drop is 7:00 p.m.
