RECAP: Surrey narrowly loses to Powell River Kings

The Surrey Eagles (1-16-1) took on the Powell River Kings (2-14-1) on Sunday as they looked to defeat the Kings for the second time this season. The game started well for the Eagles, with Shawn Leary opening the scoring just over a minute in, beating Powell River goaltender David Skacel.

The Kings, however, came back in full force, beginning with a power-play tally from forward Brenden Giles. Eagles goaltender Jaiden Sharma did his best to shut the door for the remainder of the first period, stopping the next 22 Kings shots, but with just under a minute left, Powell River’s Ryan Hedley found the back of the net. The Kings took a 2–1 lead into the second after outshooting Surrey 25–8 in the opening frame.

Powell River kept up the pressure in the second, outshooting the Eagles once again, this time 21–6. Sharma continued to stand on his head, stopping all 21 shots to keep Surrey in the game heading into the third.

The Eagles came out firing in the final frame. Leary tied the game just over a minute in, and Lucas Busch gave Surrey the lead midway through the period. But the Kings would not be denied. Brenden Giles took over, scoring both the game-tying and game-winning goals, securing first-star honours with a hat trick and an assist.

Jaiden Sharma earned Fortis Energy Player of the Game, stopping 52 of 56 shots. Marek Beaudoin claimed the third star with three assists on the night, and Shawn Leary secured the second star with his two-goal performance.

The Eagles are back in action on November 21 against the Langley Rivermen. Puck drop is at 7:00 p.m.
