RECAP: Eagles drop a nail-bitter against the Capitals as goaltenders prevail

SURREY — In the league’s solo game of the afternoon, the Surrey Eagles (0-11-0-0) battled against the Cowichan Valley Capitals (8-4-1-0), looking for redemption after losing their home opener to their opponents by a resounding score of 8-0. The first period went much better for the Eagles, who, despite giving up the game’s first goal less than three minutes into the opening period, fought back to tie the game at even with the first goal of the season from Trevor Stewart, assisted by Nishaan Parmar and Tyler Graham.

However, just when it looked like both teams would get out of the period tied at one, the Capitals scored what ended up being the game-winning goal with 13 seconds remaining in the first period. Despite three more power play opportunities for Surrey, including a four-minute high-sticking penalty in the final minutes of the game, they were unable to convert on the power play, as all of the game’s goals were scored in the first 20 minutes and at even strength. From there on out, Capitals’ goaltender Rhett Stoesser and Eagles’ goaltender Jaiden Sharma went save for save until the final whistle.

Final shots were 33-30 in favour of Cowichan as Stoesser picked up the win and the third star, and Sharma picked up the loss and the FORTIS BC Energy Player of the Game in back-to-back starts. Stewart picked up the second star of the game for the Eagles with his equalising goal that also stood as his first as an Eagle in just his second game with the team.

The Eagles will be in action next at home against the Powell River Kings on Sunday, November 2. Puck drop is slated for 4:00 p.m.
