RECAP: Eagles’ second period surge not enough against Spruce Kings

SURREY — The Surrey Eagles (0-10-0-0) clashed against the visiting Prince George Spruce Kings (5-5-0-0) in a physical bout, which saw the Spruce Kings on the power play on eight separate occasions, with only one goal to show for it. The opening frame began with Prince George getting off to an early lead, finding the game’s icebreaker in the three minutes of the match on the power play. The Spruce Kings tallied once more in the period to take a 2-0 lead after the first 20 minutes of play, leading Surrey 13-9 in the shot category.

The Eagles came out of the first intermission flying, scoring two goals in the first six minutes to notch the game at two apiece. The first goal came from the stick of Landon Jassmann, who picked up his second goal of the season, with a solo assist from Joseph Melichar. Feeding off that energy, Easton Jacobs ripped a goal home, as well, for his second goal of the season off a pass from Devon Mahil, who picked up his first point as an Eagle and in the league.

Despite the rallying effort from the Eagles, the Spruce Kings were able to score a late goal in the second period, retaining the lead, nonetheless, heading into the final 20 minutes of play. After Prince George managed to find the insurance marker in the third period, with time ticking down, Surrey had no choice but to pull their goalie, looking for two goals to tie the game, but were unable to find the back of the net before Prince George was able to officially ice the game and score an empty net goal. 5-2 Spruce Kings.

Final shots of the game were 30-23 for Prince George, as both teams managed to produce fewer than 7 shots on net for the final period. Ryder Green picked up the win for the Spruce Kings, as Nathan Claydon picked up the loss for Surrey. Mahil was the FORTIS BC Energy Player of the Game, while Jacobs was the third star for his then game-tying goal.
