February Home Games

*STATS ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE*

February 6, 2025, Surrey vs Powell River:

Surrey’s first game of the month is against a not-so-familiar foe: the Powell River Kings, who have only played the Eagles three times this season. The Eagles are on a heater right now, having won their last four. It hasn’t just been one thing either for the Eagles, who have not only scored 38 goals in their previous eight games, but also have only given up 21 goals in that span. If it weren’t for the Chiefs handing them a 7-2 loss— which was their only loss of the month— they would be sitting at just 14 goals against in that span.

The leader of this offensive explosion lately is Miles Burgin, who is on an incredible 12-game point streak. He also has nine points in his last four games, so look for Bubble Burgin to keep scoring against a River Kings team that is currently giving up the most goals in the BCHL. The Kings may have found somewhat of an answer to that problem by bringing in 6’8″ goaltender Ryan Tamelin, who was playing in the AJHL this season for the Bonnyville Pontiacs but also played a game in the WHL for the Victoria Royals. In the BCHL, though, he’s been a great addition, going 1-0-1 in his first two games while posting a respectable .908 SV% and a 3.33 GAA.

They could also turn to Vincent Lamberti, who the Eagles know all too well. The last time Powell came to the Nest, Lamberti stood on his head, stopping 36 of 39 shots, leading the Kings to a 4-3 win. Look for one of these two to have a similar night if the Kings want to come out of Surrey with another win.

February 7, 2025, Surrey vs Chilliwack:

The conference-leading Chiefs are back at the Nest for the third time this season, and the Eagles are right on their heels in the standings, sitting three points behind. The Chiefs do have two games in hand, however. The Eagles are no stranger to playing the conference leaders, going 1-3 in the season series up to this point. But the last time these two teams met was out in Chilliwack, where the Eagles soared out of there with a 4-1 win thanks to the stellar play of Aidan Fischer, who has been nothing less than phenomenal this season and is making a strong case for being right up there with Trail’s Teagan Kendrick as the best goaltender in the BCHL this season. The Eagles will need another “fishy” night on the 7th if they want to put some real pressure on the Chiefs in the standings.

That being said, the offense has been rolling lately, so look for Miles Burgin and the veteran line of Ryan Evenhuis, Brandon Gill, and Jagjeevan Phangura to come up big in key moments. The Chilliwack Chiefs are a machine this season, even if they haven’t necessarily been as hot as they were at the beginning of the year. The Chiefs still lead the Coastal Conference in both goals and goals against, boasting the third-best point differential in the BCHL at plus-50.

Look for team leader and top-10 BCHL scorer, as well as Surrey native, Mateo Mrsic to continue his high-scoring ways. Also, watch for Nathan Morin to continue to be a thorn in the side of Surrey. He has 33 points in 35 games this season, 13 of which are goals. But on top of that, in the four games against Surrey this season, Morin has 6 points and was only kept off the score sheet once by Surrey way back on the 8th of November. So expect a back-and-forth, playoff-style hockey game.

February 21, 2025, Surrey vs Langley:

The Langley Rivermen come to town after not having the best month of January, but they have plenty of time to right the ship before this matchup at the Nest. They will have to bring their A-game for this one, as they’ve had a rough go lately despite starting off the season strong. Currently, the Rivermen are 7th in the Coastal Conference.

One of the biggest things they will have to address when coming into the Nest is staying out of the box. The Rivermen are currently the second most penalized team in the BCHL, and going up against one of the best power plays on home ice in the Eagles is not a recipe for success. Look for goaltender Charlie Tritt or newly acquired Xander Miceli to be busy. The latter just got his first win in a Langley jersey, stealing a win in overtime from the Victoria Grizzlies in a game where the Rivermen were outshot 39-26.

Surrey is currently 4-1 against the Rivermen this season and has been rolling into February, having only lost one game in January. They will also try to capitalize on their extremely hot power play at home, which is second in the entire BCHL at 39.5%. However, they too will have to stay out of the box, as despite the Eagles’ stats on home ice, Langley actually has a better overall power play, sitting at 25% compared to the Eagles’ 24%.

Watch for a chippy and gritty hockey game with players like (former Eagle) Sid McNeill, Ryan Schelling, Yuchan Kong, and Sihwan Kim looking to capitalize on the man advantage.

February 28, 2025, Surrey vs Prince George:

The Spruce Kings round off the home games in February for the Eagles, and it’s a familiar matchup for the Eagles, as this will be the sixth meeting between these two teams this season. The Eagles are currently 3-2 against the Spruce Kings, winning their last two meetings by a combined score of 11-6. The Eagles will have to try their best not to underestimate the Spruce Kings, as they were able to put up five goals on Surrey in their last meeting. However, they also gave up seven, and the Eagles have shown no signs of slowing down, especially offensively.

Ryan Evenhuis, one of the players leading the charge offensively for the Eagles this season, put up a whopping four points in that 7-5 win for the Eagles. It was also the last time big man and front-of-the-net specialist Cam Caron found the back of the net. Sam Elliott, who has recently come back from injury and looks poised to make an impact, also scored his first goal in this game.

But Prince George didn’t go away easily in that one. They actually tied the game about halfway through the second off the stick of Ryan Wachtel, and Brock Cummings was held to only one assist, which you can’t count on happening very often. So expect a high-flying, potentially even high-scoring affair in this one.
